Have you ever played Survival Horror games? They are always based on the helplessness of the main character, who needs to survive and escape or fight scary enemies. The scenery in such games is also scary – it can be a creepy old school as in the “Evil Nun: The Broken Mask”, a scary summer camp as in “The Quarry”, or a psychiatric hospital from “Outlast”. The scary atmosphere also has such horror elements as stress and suspense, and the main character needs to solve puzzles and find different things for inventory. However, some survival horrors are focused on escaping from enemies and avoiding them, while others are about monster hunting and bloody battles. Check out our list of four different terrifying survival horror games to try out. Each of them has its unique features and psychological twists.
OUTLAST 2
The game takes place in an abandoned backwater village in rural Arizona. A cameraman Blake and his wife, journalist Lynn want to investigate the gruesome murder of the young pregnant woman found in this region. The investigation turns out to be a terrifying journey with an intriguing mystery. Blake and Linn meet many hostile villagers, who believe in the cult of New Ezekiel, a religious cult with Satanic leanings. The more they learn about this terrible cult and the secrets of the scary town with fanatic villagers, the more the main character Blake goes crazy.
Parallel to the main action, the action also takes place in Blake’s painful hallucinations about his past in St. Sybil High School, where he meets his friend Jessica. All in all, the atmosphere, graphics, screamers, two parallel storylines, many different locations (mines, school, the temple, villages of people from different religious sects) and a story with two parallel developing storylines make “Outlast 2” a masterpiece. As in other first-person horror games, the player must find many items and solve puzzles. At the end of the story, the truth about the village and the main hero turns out to be astonishing and scary. The game has five difficulties and can be played by just one person. So, it is not a game for a relaxing evening with friends playing Canadian online casino or board games. “Outlast 2” is a terrifying and mystic thriller you can play between bouts of hiding behind the sofa.
THE QUARRY
We included this game in this list not just because it is a survival horror, but it is also a choice-based interactive film. That means that in this game, the fate of the main characters is directly dependent on the player’s decisions and the so-called Quick Time Events. The plot is also intriguing – a group of teenage counselors find themselves in Hacketts Quarry Summer Camp, where strange things happen. In addition, the genre of interactive cinema involves multiple, branching narrative endings. Otherwise, the game has all the elements of survival horror such as suspense and collectibles. Tarot cards, which the player finds throughout the game, are the clues to the mystery of this mysterious place.
RESIDENT EVIL VILLAGE
The main character of the game, Ethan, is looking for his kidnapped daughter in a mysterious village with scary mutant creatures. The locations of the game are full of intrigue and atmosphere and look like historical places from the 19th century. The beautiful scenery and epic boss fights make this game enjoyable and terrifying.
EVIL NUN: THE BROKEN MASK
This game is a remake of the mobile nun game from the Keplerians, which was created in 2018. As in the original mobile game, the player must escape from the creepy school, which is under the control of Sister Madeline, a cruel nun. The game has several levels of difficulty and several chapters and escape options. Even though the game was published on Steam only recently, it is undoubtedly an amazing survival horror game in the haunted house games genre. This means that the hero finds himself trapped in an enclosed house and must find a way out of it. To do this, you need to find a lot of collectibles and clues, discover new rooms and places and solve puzzles. Naturally, the main task of the player is to avoid meeting with a creepy nun with a big hammer.
